Clever Canines Therapy & Obedience Club has teamed with the Appomattox Regional Library to enhance children's love of reading through the use of registered therapy dogs.
Children participating in the program have the opportunity to come to the library to read to dogs (and their owners). All dog and owner teams have successfully completed training and testing and regularly visit nursing homes and assisted living facilities.
Research shows that children who are learning to read feel more relaxed and less self-conscious when reading to dogs. The program aims to improve reading skills, nurture a lifelong love of reading, and help children build bonds with dogs.
You must sign up in advance at the Appomattox Regional Library. Children must be in grades 2, 3, or 4 to participate. You can sign your child up to read to a therapy dog during a 15 minute individual session from 4:30 – 5:30pm on January 13, February 10, or March 10, 2010
In addition to our Clever Canines’ Book Buddies Program, the library will be showing the movie MY DOG SKIP on Thursday, January 14th at 4:30 in Hopewell and Friday, January 15th at 4:30 in McKenney.
To wrap up our wild, canine events the local SPCA will be providing two programs:
