The Appomattox Regional Library System partners with Clever Canines Therapy & Obedience Club to enhance children’s love of reading through the use of registered therapy dogs.
Research shows that children who are learning to read feel more relaxed and less self-conscious when reading to dogs. The Book Buddies program aims to improve reading skills, nurture a lifelong love of reading, and help children build bonds with dogs.
Children in 2nd through 4th grades have the opportunity to come to the Hopewell Library to read to dogs during 15 minute individual sessions. All dog and owner teams have successfully completed training and regularly visit nursing homes and assisted living facilities.
Registration is required and children must be in grades 2, 3, or 4 to participate. For more information about the current schedule or to sign up, stop by the Information Desk at the Hopewell Library or call 804-458-6329 ext. 1005.
