Aloha Y'all : Music of the Tubize Royal Hawaiian Orchestra

Aloha Y'all will perform Saturday, May 17, 2008 at the Hopewell Library.

Aloha Y'all will recreate the music of the Tubize Royal Hawaiian Orchestra and present a mini-lecture on the history of Hawaiian roots music. The Tubize Royal Hawaiians performed traditional Hawaiian songs, popular Hawaiian-style music, and original compositions both in Hopewell, and across the United States.

The show is free and open to the public.

The Appomattox Regional Library is now a stop on the 2008 Virginia TimeTravelers Passport!

The Hopewell Library has been added as stop on the 2008 TimeTravelers program "Virginia Harmonies" as part of the New Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music exhibit. Students who visit the exhibit here (and other historic sites) can collect a stamp to start them on their way to receiving a certificate from Governor Kaine, a TimeTravelers patch, and a t-shirt! Start up materials, information, and stamps are available from the checkout desk at the Hopewell Library.

New Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music is currently on display at the Hopewell Library until May 24, 2008. New Harmonies explores the distinct cultural identities of American roots music, from blues to bluegrass, with recordings, photographs, instruments, lyrics, and artist profiles. 

Also on display are two local exhibits, Old Friends: Music of the Southside from 1900-1930 and Transmission: Songs from Then to Now. Old Friends presents four local music stories and their relation to the roots music styles of Hawaiian, western swing, jubilee gospel, and slave spirituals. Transmission tracks the lyrics and arrangements of today’s popular songs to their foundations in early roots music genres.

New Harmonies is part of Museum on Main Street, a collaboration between the Smithsonian
Institution and the Virginia Association of Museums. Support for Museum on Main Street has been provided by the United States Congress. For additional information on New Harmonies or Museum on Main Street, visit www.museumonmainstreet.org.

The Appomattox Regional Libraries has partnered with the Historic Hopewell Foundation and the Beacon Theatre for New Harmonies, along with local historic sites. In addition to the exhibit, the Library is hosting a weekly Saturday Music Series featuring a wide range of musical acts, and a Thursday Lecture Series presenting lectures on aspects of roots music. Support for these events has been provided by the City of Hopewell.
