Learn about a Prince George WWII Veteran at the Prince George Library

Pay tribute to our Veterans at the Prince George Library on Thursday, November 10th at 6:00 pm as the library welcomes author James Breig. Mr. Breig is the author of Searching for Sgt. Bailey: Saluting an Ordinary Soldier of World War II which chronicles the life of Army Sgt. James Boisseau Bailey, a Prince George man serving in World War II.

Inspired by letters found in an antique shop, James Breig began to search them for telltale clues to the soldier’s life and for hidden hints about Sgt. Bailey’s fears, worries, and hopes. Through this search Searching for Sgt. Bailey was born and Mr. Breig reclaims one forgotten serviceman from obscurity while also capturing Army life during this time.

Edward Zapletal, publisher for History Magazine, says “It’s a human failing that we take for granted the efforts of those who toil in the background … James Breig gives us reason to pause and live a few moments in the life of Sergeant Bailey, an average World War II soldier. Let’s not forget him or any of the others, regardless of the conflict or the size of their sacrifices.”

Shari’s Nonprofit Pick: Results Now for Nonprofits

Capacity-building expert and MBA/PhD author of Results Now, Mark Light, identifies four pillars of high performance: purpose, strategy, operations, and governance. He also identifies seven realities that make high performance a challenge for nonprofit organizations: limited time, imperfect knowledge, size of the board, composition of the board, fundability, continuity, and executive director inexperience. The good news is that he offers the Results Now master plan and outlines it in the pages of this important book. You will be asked five questions. Answer them, and the author says, “In no time at all, you can develop a simple master plan that your company can put to immediate use.” You’ll want to read this book. Check it out.

Need funding? There are still a few spots available in Find Funding (free, but registration is required). Also, whether you’re already serving on a nonprofit board or are thinking about board service, don’t miss Building Blocks for Nonprofit Board Members.

Meet Donna Andrews

Meet Donna Andrews Oct 8 at the Hopewell Library

Donna Andrews’ latest book is more of the same. That’s not a bad thing!

Andrews, a resident of northern Virginia, has carved out a niche for herself in the world of mystery novels. Her “Meg Lanslow” series features a group of eccentric and memorable characters associated with the fictional Virginia “Caerphilly College.” Meg’s husband teaches at the college, which brings her into contact with a large community, in which murders happen with some regularity- usually around one per novel.

Donna’s latest novel is entitled “The Real Macaw.” It places Meg in the trying predicament of having a menagerie of assorted animals dumped on her due to the closing of an animal shelter while she attempts to take care of her own newborn twins! To top it off, the volunteer who transported all the animals to Meg’s farm turns up dead. One more thing to deal with!

Andrews’ approach to the mystery novel is to keep things light and funny, focus on characters, and to weave the murder into the tapestry seamlessly. The reader will have no sharp intakes of breath, but plenty of chuckles. Want to know how Andrews does it? Why not ask her yourself?

Donna Andrews will be speaking at the Hopewell Library at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday October 8, at the Hopewell/Prince George Friends of the Library Fall Meeting. Also bring a bag lunch and join us at 1pm for a book discussion led by Librarian Chris Wiegard before meeting Ms. Andrews.

The Titanic Sets Sail in Prince George

The Titanic departs from England in April 1912.

The Titanic sails into Prince George local history as the Prince George Library hosts a presentation by Jeanie LeNoir Langford. “The Titanic Sails into Local History” is the story of the ill-fated liner and her connections to the Hopewell/Prince George area. The Appomattox Regional Library System offers this presentation free to the public on Thursday, September 29th at 6 pm at our new Prince George Library.

Ms. Langford will provide information on Robert W. Daniel, “The Master of Brandon”, and his escape from the sinking ship along with his first wife Mrs. Lucien P. Smith, who was also a Titanic survivor. Attendees will also hear about local connections to the Olympic (the Titanic’s sister) and how Hopewell/Prince George natives are still impacting the fate of the Titanic and its artifacts. Ms. Langford tells us that “the community ties to this great liner are shrouded in mystery and full of twists and turns” and she has promised the audience a “night to remember.”
