Join the Appomattox Regional Library System for our “Before They Were Movies” film series. We will be showing family movies based on popular books on the following dates:
- Wednesday, January 26th @ 2 pm in Carson Library
- Thursday, January 27th @ 2 pm in McKenney Library
- Friday, January 28th @ 2 pm in Hopewell Library
Those who arrive first will get to choose which of our books-turned-movies film we’ll see… Will it be a movie about the adventures of a teenage demi-god? A film that shows you how to train your dragon? Or maybe one about Wild Things. YOU decide!

William and Mateen check out the Hopewell Early Literacy Activity Center.
Three locations of the Appomattox Regional Library System have received Early Literacy Activity Centers from the Library of Virginia. The three libraries to receive these centers are: the Hopewell Library, the Rohoic Library, and the highly anticipated Prince George Library which is currently under construction.
These centers in Hopewell and Rohoic will be available for children to use whenever the libraries are open. According to the Virginia Public Library, the goal of these centers is to make the library welcoming to the youngest citizens and provide materials to develop early literacy skills. Each Early Literacy Activity Center contains items such as a magnetic design center, search and find alphabet bags along with theme-specific items which will regularly change.

The American Library Association (ALA) selected 4,000 school and public libraries throughout the country to receive the seventh We the People Bookshelf award. Libraries from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and several U.S. territories received a collection of 17 books for young readers on the theme “A More Perfect Union.” The Appomattox Regional Library System is proud to be among the recipients of this award and invite you to come check out some of these books which we have on display at our Hopewell Library.
Our goal is to bring the youth of our community together by uniting them through history. To do this, the Appomattox Regional Library System is hosting a variety of speakers and presenters who can offer special insights and we are inviting area youth to come learn about our rich culture. Already we have hosted experts in the field of local Hopewell history, early water-faring adventurers and a program where youth made South American crafts. Still to come is a presentation from Appomattox Manor about early life on a Virginia plantation on November 3, 2010 at 4:30pm and our “Harvest Your Heritage” celebration on November 20, 2010 from 2:00-5:00pm.
