Help the Library Harvest Our Heritage

The American Library Association (ALA) selected 4,000 school and public libraries throughout the country to receive the seventh We the People Bookshelf award. Libraries from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and several U.S. territories received a collection of 17 books for young readers on the theme “A More Perfect Union.” The Appomattox Regional Library System is proud to be among the recipients of this award and invite you to come check out some of these books which we have on display at our Hopewell Library.

Our goal is to bring the youth of our community together by uniting them through history. To do this, the Appomattox Regional Library System is hosting a variety of speakers and presenters who can offer special insights and we are inviting area youth to come learn about our rich culture. Already we have hosted experts in the field of local Hopewell history, early water-faring adventurers and a program where youth made South American crafts. Still to come is a presentation from Appomattox Manor about early life on a Virginia plantation on November 3, 2010 at 4:30pm and our “Harvest Your Heritage” celebration on November 20, 2010 from 2:00-5:00pm.

Discover Early Hopewell History

“The land that forms Appomattox Manor, at the confluence of the Appomattox and James rivers, is one of the oldest estates in America” according to the National Park Services.  The Appomattox Regional Library System is happy to host a special guest from the Appomattox Manor on Wednesday, November 3rd @ 4:00 pm.

Emmanuel Dabney, Lead Interpreter Ranger for Grant’s Headquarters at City Point, will be at the  Hopewell Library to discuss what early life on a plantation was like. Mr. Dabney specialized in the history of the Eppes family and especially their management of the plantation. This presentation goes well-beyond the Eppes family as Mr. Dabney discusses the lives of slave families who worked and lived on this land. We invite attendees of all ages to join us for this educational look back at an important part of Virginia’s history.

WrestleMania Reading Challenge

“Reading prepares you for being a successful adult in the real world. I wouldn’t be where I am today had it not been for reading.” That’s what ECW Champion Matt Hardy, MVP, said when asked why World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) is co-sponsoring the WrestleMania Reading Challenge.
The WWE is tag teaming with the Young Adult Library Services Association, and approximately 1,800 libraries across the country to encourage teens to read. Teens can join at any Appomattox Regional Library System location.
Here’s how it works:
•Teens in grades 5-12 sign up for the program and receive a PLEDGE form and a PROJECT form.
•Pledge to read five books, graphic novels, or magazines.
•Turn in a completed pledge form and receive a WWE mini-poster and bookmark (each time you read one of the items you pledged to read, return to the library for a WWE trading card).

•FINALLY: complete the designated project for your age group:

-5th and 6th graders design a bookmark which includes a slogan that promotes reading,

-7th through 12th graders design a poster featuring a tag team of their favorite character from literature and their favorite WWE Superstar, and illustrates the strategy they would use to defeat the current WWE Tag Team Champions.
