A Tale of Two Dinwiddie Citizens: Thomas Day and Elizabeth Keckley

Please join us at Dinwiddie Branch, March 10th at 7 P.M. Betty Bowen of the Dinwiddie Historical Society will speak on Thomas Day and Elizabeth Keckley, both born in Dinwiddie and touched by slavery. Both Keckley and Day became public figures well-known in their trades. This presentation bridges our observation of the sesquicentennial, Black History Month AND Women’s History Month.

Thomas Day, born 1801 to free black parents in Dinwiddie County, became a prominent craftsman of  furniture craftsman and cabinetry. His work was known and appreciated through much of the southeast. Elizabeth Keckley was born a slave in February 1818 in the Dinwiddie Courthouse area. She became a successful seamstress who eventually became a confidante to Mary Todd Lincoln and the author of her autobiography, Behind the Scenes Or, Thirty Years a Slave and Four Years in the White House.

The Friends of the Library – Dinwiddie (FOLD) are happy to bring us this program in celebration of Dinwiddie Branch’s   Tenth Anniversary  anniversary.

Prince George Branch: February 14, 2011

Paint, tile and more windows are progressing right now. Lighting too is in full swing. The floors are estimated to be finished in two weeks, and cabinetry will be the next big project. Check out the blue color accenting the children’s silo area, giving it a three-dimensional appearance. Outside, some developments: Gravel beds now define where some of the paths leading from the park to the library will be. The outer skin of the silo feature is shiny as the metal covering goes up. Inside, tile reflects the natural setting outside. The sun pours in, emphasizing how bright this interior will be.

Prince George Library: January 31, 2011

Windows are nearly done. The visual impact is huge both from the outside and the inside. Shown above are the view from the cafe windows, looking towards Scott Park, and two views of the upper windows from outside. One exterior photo is the front of the building, facing the cafe. The other shows other end of the building, where the children’s area will be housed.

Another wonderful development: the lighting in the building is installed and working, as seen above. If you happen to drive by at dusk, you will see a welcoming glow from the windows.

Prince George Library Update:

Windows

On a rare sunny day this month, light peeks through the upper windows.

The windows are still being installed throughout the library. Drywall and doors are  also progressing now.  Contractors continue to be busy inside and out as the finishing touches are added. The plumbing may not work, but it is there.

Prince George Library, January 3, 2011

The New Year begins with a new skin for the Prince George Branch. Windows are the most visible sign of progress today. The building is wrapped in plastic to aid futher construction inside, and will soon be replaced by doors and windows.  The upper windows that will provide ample natural lighting are already in place; other windows soon will follow. Once the building is enclosed the interior work will move forward very quickly.

Prince George Library, December 6, 2010

Outside of the library the brickwork is near complete, as is the standing seam metal roof. The pathway to the library from the parking lot is taking shape as well. But the big changes are coming to the interior. Walls are framed with some of these walls now covered with insulation. Drywall is going up to form the wall exteriors.  And some rooms are walled off from the main area, soon to have doors installed. This project is on time and will soon feature windows.

Prince George Library: November 8, 2010

The most visible change to the observer this week will be the roof; the construction team is now installing the metal roofing. The interior and exterior brick work is nearly complete. The building awaits drywall and glass. The walkways approaching the library are now under construction. So are the walls that will enclose the cafe patio area. On this sunny day it is easy to imagine sitting on the patio beneath the trees with a good book.
