After

Before
The pictures say it all. As of early May, the building is virtually complete. Finishing touches on the carpet, paint, and wood siding are nearly done. Grass seed is spread and plans being made for the landscaping. Furniture is ordered. Books are boxed and ready to move.
Here we see the finished project. The “before” picture shows the area now graced with the library seen in the “after” shot. “Before” shows the building’s footings, roughed in plumbing and lots of gravel. A lot of change in a year’s time.

What do taxes, fools and spring cleaning have in common? They all share the month of April, also known as National Financial Literacy Month. To be financially literate is to better understand your financial issues and to make informed choices, a subject that often becomes more relevant at tax time. The Rohoic Branch of the Appomattox Regional Library System will welcome Aisha Quarles of Virginia Supportive Housing to present information on managing credit. The Virginia Supportive Housing
office offers counseling and financial literacy programs as well as assistance in finding affordable housing solutions. At this presentation you may learn how to use credit wisely and avoid credit pitfalls. Do a spring cleaning on your bottom line at Rohoic Branch, Thursday, April 14 at 6 p.m. It’s free and open to the public.

If you’ve driven by the branch lately you may have noticed lights going on and off. The lighting is complete inside, and the park pathway lighting outside as well. The outdoor lighting is designed to come on in the dark, and go out when it is light.
Outside the finishing trim continues to go up, and the cedar looks great against the brick and metal. Inside, the cabinetry is all but done. Pictured above are views of the teen area, the circulation desk, and the cafe. Built in seating shown in the cafe and teen area will be supplemented by chairs and tables. Where there is a window with a view, there will be a comfortable seat nearby.

The finishing touches begin this month with the tile and carpeting laid inside and the wood trim going up outside. Visitors to the park will also notice the paths being defined that lead to the library from the parking lot and from the park as well. The silo feature in the back is completely clad, and the patio area outside the cafe is taking shape. Note in the pictures that cabinetry is going in now as well.

Please join us at Dinwiddie Branch, March 10th at 7 P.M. Betty Bowen of the Dinwiddie Historical Society will speak on Thomas Day and Elizabeth Keckley, both born in Dinwiddie and touched by slavery. Both Keckley and Day became public figures well-known in their trades. This presentation bridges our observation of the sesquicentennial, Black History Month AND Women’s History Month.
Thomas Day, born 1801 to free black parents in Dinwiddie County, became a prominent craftsman of furniture craftsman and cabinetry. His work was known and appreciated through much of the southeast. Elizabeth Keckley was born a slave in February 1818 in the Dinwiddie Courthouse area. She became a successful seamstress who eventually became a confidante to Mary Todd Lincoln and the author of her autobiography, Behind the Scenes Or, Thirty Years a Slave and Four Years in the White House.
The Friends of the Library – Dinwiddie (FOLD) are happy to bring us this program in celebration of Dinwiddie Branch’s
anniversary.

Paint, tile and more windows are progressing right now. Lighting too is in full swing. The floors are estimated to be finished in two weeks, and cabinetry will be the next big project. Check out the blue color accenting the children’s silo area, giving it a three-dimensional appearance. Outside, some developments: Gravel beds now define where some of the paths leading from the park to the library will be. The outer skin of the silo feature is shiny as the metal covering goes up. Inside, tile reflects the natural setting outside. The sun pours in, emphasizing how bright this interior will be.

Windows are nearly done. The visual impact is huge both from the outside and the inside. Shown above are the view from the cafe windows, looking towards Scott Park, and two views of the upper windows from outside. One exterior photo is the front of the building, facing the cafe. The other shows other end of the building, where the children’s area will be housed.
Another wonderful development: the lighting in the building is installed and working, as seen above. If you happen to drive by at dusk, you will see a welcoming glow from the windows.
