Dr. Stevenson, head archeologist for the Golden Ball Tavern archeological site, will give a presentation about this pre-Revolutionary site at the Rohoic Branch of the Appomattox Regional Library System on September 9th at 6:30 PM. The Golden Ball Tavern, originally built in the 1760s, was a significant location in what is now Petersburg’s Old Town area. The presentation will cover the results of three years of excavations at the site.

The roof is close to being completely framed in, and it is easier than ever to visualize the finished interior. The ceiling will remain open showing natural wood. The exterior of the roof is yet to come and remains covered in protective material. The inside masonry is progressing, with the brick columns going up as the roof is built. The mechanical systems, shown here as HVAC conduits,  will eventually be out of sight. The open areas near the roof line will be windows that allow natural light into the building. Wood, brick and light will combine to create an interior echoing the setting outside.

Big excitement today as the rafters of the roof are going up. Please enjoy the video below showing the materials being moved into place, and then the A-frame being manuevered into the brackets already installed where the roof meets the wall.

Work is progressing despite the recent stormy weather. Recent visitors will notice the building now has walls and some roofing. Masonry work will continue in the coming weeks.

Walls are up with the roofing started this week. Onlookers will recognize the cafe area with the view of Scott Park. The children’s area beyond the meeting room still lacks the round silo detail but is otherwise progressing. The meeting room itself is well underway. The bright purple walls are a temporary but colorful feature of the building this week.

The town of Carson first received library service from the Appomattox Regional Library System through an established book mobile stop in 1975. Use outstretched that means of service, and a larger and permanently parked bookmobile replaced it in 1985. Again, patronage outgrew the solution. Public support and the generous gifts of Carson residents Lillie and John H. Clements provided a solution. The Clements family donated land and an 1888 train station building, which was renovated and opened as the Carson Depot Branch Library in October of 1991. An authentic caboose joined it in 2002.

More exciting changes, as the walls start to go up. The cafe walls take shape with large window areas left exposed. Patrons will be able to sit at the counter and view the park. To the side that is facing the court house, work continues on the meeting room.

From the Heart joins Dinwiddie knitters July 14th (and every second and fourth Wednesday at 1PM.)

Cool off and think warm thoughts at the Dinwiddie Branch Library of the Appomattox Regional Library System. Learn to knit and crochet with representatives from From the Heart, an organization devoted to teaching volunteer knitters, who will produce  items for donation, including blankets, “chemo caps.” These items benefit area hospitals, nursing homes, and veterans’ homes.  All class materials are free. We are accepting donations of needles and yarn at all branch locations. All ages and skill levels are welcome; we welcome experienced knitters and crocheters too.
