Hopewell Named “Playful City USA”
With only 1-in-5 children in the U.S. currently living within walking distance of a park or playground, 151 cities and towns, including Hopewell, earned recognition as 2011 Playful City USA communities for their efforts to increase play opportunities for children. “Hopewell is proud to be one of the 151 cities selected as a Playful City. Out of the 151 cities listed, the state of Virginia has only 3 Playful Cities and we feel especially proud to be listed as one of them. Although our community is less than 25,000 in population and is only about 11 square miles, we have been very fortunate to have 24 recreational sites within the City of Hopewell. Recreational pursuits are very important to our residents and in creating a Playful City, we can enhance the opportunities of recreational activities as we create community through parks, people, and places. Joining Kaboom will help us to do just that!” states Jo Turek, director of Recreation an Hopewell Department of d Park. Playful City USA is a national program advocating for local policies that increase play opportunities for children. KaBOOM!, the national non-profit organization dedicated to saving play, created Playful City USA in 2007 to help local governments address the Play Deficit by ensuring their children have the time and space they need to play.
