Prince George Library, September 27, 2010

The new library is fifty percent finished and right on schedule. Masonry work on the exterior continues and the finishing touches to the roof are coming soon. The ceiling is a very impressive sight with height and exposed beams, and natural light will flow in from the upper windows. The exterior of the  children’s area and different exterior sides are shown below as well as the main long view of the interior and some interior details.

Meet Author Shirley Sagawa

We are very excited to bring Shirley Sagawa, co-author of The Charismatic Organization, to the Southside region for our first Community Book Talk!

Space is limited. Register now!

What people are saying about THE CHARISMATIC ORGANIZATION

“For every organization aspiring to greatness, here is the very best how-to book from the most effective can-do consulting team I know.”
…Marguerite W. Kondracke, President and CEO, AMERICA’S PROMISE ALLIANCE

“Sagawa and Jospin do not suggest that nonprofits operate more like businesses; nor do they create false trade-offs–like the need to be mission-driven or data-driven. Instead, they chart a new path, by identifying the ideas and practices that high-impact organizations are using to change the world.”
…Jeffrey L. Bradach, Managing Partner and Co-founder, THE BRIDGESPAN GROUP

“The Charismatic Organization draws an authoritative blueprint for using social capital to transform good intentions into concrete results.”
…PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON

Shirley Sagawa, co-founder of the Sagawa/Jospin consulting firm, was named a “Woman to Watch in the 21st Century,” by Newsweek, and one of the “Most Influential Working Mothers in America” by Working Mother. She is currently a fellow with the Center for American Progress. Shirley has served as a presidential appointee in both the first Bush and Clinton Administrations. Ms. Sagawa is a graduate of Smith College, the London School of Economics and Harvard Law School, where she served on the Harvard Law Review.

Shari’s Nonprofit Pick: The Charismatic Organization

The Charismatic Organization: 8 Ways to Grow a Nonprofit that Builds Buzz, Delights Donors & Energizes Employees by Shirley Sagawa & Deborah Jospin

The inside cover of this book tells us that “too many nonprofits today are unable to operate at their full potential because they are stuck in ineffective “business as usual” paradigms.” Broken down into two main parts, the book covers how to build a charismatic organization with a strong core and then how to use that charisma to grow a community of support. Sagawa and Jospin do a thorough job explaining the importance of social capital and culture, using data-driven decision making, choosing the right tools for communication, and much more. Their chapter on meaningful involvement can’t be repeated often enough. Check it out! Come hear author Shirley Sagawa speak Thursday night at the Sycamore Rouge theater. Ms. Sagawa will be available to sign copies of The Charismatic Organization as well as her newest title, The American Way to Change.

Shari’s Nonprofit Pick: Trust Agents

Trust Agents: Using the Web to Build Influence, Improve Reputation, and Earn Trust by Chris Brogan & Julien Smith

I’m a fan of Seth Godin, so if he says something is a “must read,” I tend to take notice. All across the web, you can find articles agreeing with Godin’s view of this book. One blogger calls Trust Agents “real competition” for Dale Carnegie’s How to Win Friends and Influence People. The writer on Copyblogger calls the book a “stand-out piece,” and Eric Brown says “any company in the world can benefit greatly from the information presented in this book.” This book is a perfect blend of theoretical and practical, and gives you real ways to use the Internet to build relationships (unsurprisingly, the authors encourage us all to connect with people online and then find ways to meet them in person). This book is a must-read for any of us wanting to maximize our social media efforts. Check it out.
