Meet the Branch: Dinwiddie

The branch that became the Dinwiddie Branch library has the distinction of having been located at various times in two different trailers. In 2000, the Dinwiddie Branch, ARLS, moved from its last trailer into the renovated Circuit Clerk’s Office in the historic Dinwiddie Courthouse complex. This historic setting puts the library next door to the Dinwiddie County Historical Society.  Read the rest of this entry »

Prince George Library, June 7, 2010

Steel bars went up this week on the site. The steel was laid out near where it would be installed. The sequence here shows the crane lifting the bar from the ground to an upright position, while workers on the ground help to manuever them into place.

Light Read Offers Plenty to Think About

Life’s a Beach by Claire Cook

The “Beach Babes” will talk about this book while enjoying a light summer supper on June 10 at 6:00 p.m. in the Hopewell Library Quiet Room. This event is part of our “Water Your Mind” Summer Reading Program for Adults.

Author Claire Cook, made popular by her hit novel Must Love Dogs, pens a winner with the easy-to-read Life’s a Beach. The story’s main character, 41 year-old Ginger Walsh, is trifling with her art and dabbling in a casual relationship with glassblower boyfriend Noah, while happily living above her parent’s garage with her cat named Boyfriend. Her career-driven sister’s impending 50th birthday and her nephew’s landing a film part forces Ginger to think outside of herself and to finally grow up. Cook provides a fresh look at midlife crisis.

On the surface the book is light, but you’ll find lots of think about while laughing along with the quirky characters who work through sibling rivalry and self-actualization.

Committed by Elizabeth Gilbert: What is Marriage?

Committed by Elizabeth Gilbert

Elizabeth Gilbert hit publishing pay dirt with her Eat, Pray, Love. She decided to try to mend her soul following the painful ending of first marriage by globetrotting. She sought spiritual enlightenment in India, then delicious food in Italy, and ended up with an unexpected romance in Indonesia. It repaired her soul, and yielded her a bestseller nonfiction title at the same time. It was irresistible stuff, especially for female readers.

Her latest book is also nonfiction, but a bit different. This was not the book that Elizabeth planned to write, but one day in an airport, Homeland Security dragged her boyfriend off (he’s the unexpected romance from Indonesia) and told them both, sorry, we are kicking him out of the country because of limitations on visa renewals. If you want to live with him in the USA ever again, you are going to have to marry him first.
