Learn to Knit & Crochet for Free

The Hopewell Library joins area nonprofit knitting and crocheting group, From the HFromtheHearteart, to teach knitting and crocheting, and to provide blankets, chemo caps, and other items to area hospitals, nursing homes, and veterans’ homes. Everything produced during the knitting/crocheting sessions will be donated to these organizations so they may make them available for their patients and residents.

Yarn and needles are provided free of charge for those who need them but donations of yarn and needles are welcome.

The Library’s Gone to the Dogs!

January 11th – January 21st

Clever Canines Therapy & Obedience Club has teamed with the Appomattox Regional Library to enhance children’s love of reading through the use of registered therapy dogs.

Children participating in the program have the opportunity to come to the library to read to dogs (and their owners). All dog and owner teams have successfully completed training and testing and regularly visit nursing homes and assisted living facilities.

Research shows that children who are learning to read feel more relaxed and less self-conscious when reading to dogs. The program aims to improve reading skills, nurture a lifelong love of reading, and help children build bonds with dogs.

You must sign up in advance at the Appomattox Regional Library. Children must be in grades 2, 3, or 4 to participate. You can sign your child up to read to a therapy dog during a 15 minute individual session from 4:30 – 5:30pm on January 13, February 10, or March 10, 2010
